Nepal defeats East Timor 2-1

Finally.. one good news. Nepali football team going to Jordan after defeating East Timor.

Nepal has defeated East Timor 2-1 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier match played at Dasharath Stadiim in the Capital on Wednesday.

Nepali striker Anil Gurung and mid-fielder Jumanu Rai scored the goals at the 14th and 69th minute of the match.

East Timor succeeded to score a goal against Nepal at the 47th minute of the game.

Bharat Khawas received two yellow cards and was excluded from the ground.

Nepal ranks 147 in the FIFA ranking while East Timor ranks 200.

Nepal’s Stolen Children

Anuradha Koirala(Maiti Nepal) , CNN hero of 2010 along with American actress Demi Moore (production) are together to help Nepal to prevent Nepali childrens from being sold.

Following her meeting with Koirala, Moore traveled to South Asia in order to film “Nepal’s Stolen Children,” an in-depth documentary about sex trafficking in the Himalayan country.

Moore and her husband Ashton Kutcher founded the organization, The Demi and Ashton Foundation (DNA) to help the cause of Maiti Nepal, one of the oldest organizations in Nepal that helps fight sex trafficking and rehabilitate victims of sex trafficking.

"Nepal’s Stolen Children" will premiere this Sunday, June 26, 2011 on CNN. You can watch the promo preview below.

VW Beetle Raly

The Association of Nepal Beetle Users Group (ANBUG) organised  ‘ANBUG Himalayan Volkswagen (VW) Beetle Rally 2011’ Today. The annual event was organised under the theme ‘Bug against Drug’.

Wow Beetle.. road full of Beetle cars. Actually Beetle comes among one of my favorite cars.

In a statement, the association said the main objective of the rally is to create awareness about drug abuse and generate funds to support drug addicts undergoing rehabilitation in Re-unity Nepal Rehabilitation Centre (RNRC) in Balefi, Bhotekoshi. The event also seeks to provide aid to a local school, Shree Balefi Secondary School. ANBUG is expecting around 40 VW Beetle cars and 100 participants

I got to see a lot of photos in facebook about the wall's of kathmandu city being painted with some great ideas of changing the nation by our own effort rather being dependent on some fat politician (no offence) who don't even care about their country and people.

One of them is kailash sherestha. Shrestha said, “Everywhere you look there are political slogans or posters, we thought, we’d give the place a new look. People are tired and frustrated seeing the same things. We just wanted to bring some flavor—a change.”

Electric Cars Nepal

All for a good cause: Electric cars at the third Spinal Injury Rehabilitation E-Car Rally that went through Maitighar and Sanga, in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Altogether 30 vehicles will be participating, including more than 24 Reva cars, Nepal-made Safa tempos, and newly introduced battery-powered scooters. The participants will include individual owners of electric vehicles as well as organisations such as ICIMOD, GTZ, WFP, the Norwegian and US embassies. The umbrella organisation Electric Vehicles Association of Nepal (EVAN) will also be taking part.

Harry Potter in Nepali

The first of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was translated into Nepali and launched in 2009.

Lucia de Vries of Sunbird Publishers, which brought out the translation, says that they had hoped Harry Potter would become hype here, too, so they could earn enough to produce more fun books. The sales of the Nepali version has been slow but steady.

Sunbird Publishers is a non-profit company set up by five women of different Nepali and foreign origins: Helen Sherpa, Lucia de Vries, Bhubaneswari Sachal, Shanta Shrestha, and Yashoda Shrestha.

To Khasa & back

Route: Kathmandu–Tibetan Border–Kathmandu: The Complete Arniko Highway Round.

Details
Lazimpat, Singha Durbar, Koteshwor, Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel, Dolalghat, Bahrabise, past Borderlands, The Last Resort, Tatopani, and Miteri Pul, and back.

Costs
Rs 1,500 (minimum six riders) per pax. Includes road captain, support mechanic and breakfast at Dhulikhel. All other foods and drinks have to be borne by the riders themselves.

What to bring along
Full tank of gas, valid driving license and updated Blue Book, preferably a full-faced helmet with visors, basic tools and some spares like spark plugs, accelerator and clutch cables, inner tube etc. We also have our mechanic and carry standard spares along with us. We, however, recommend that you check your bike with a RE mechanic before every ride out of the Valley, as the bike repairs out of the Valley still consider a Bullet an untouchable.

Route description

We meet at the Himalayan Enfielders club/workshop (adjacent to the Israeli Embassy at Lazimpat) at 7 am After a road briefing, we head to Dhulikhel. It’s approximately 30 kilometers in the east, one-hour ride through the Kathmandu traffic via Singha Durbar, Koteshwor, and the newly built “killer” 6-lane Bhaktapur Highway.After a short stop of fueling ourselves and some photo opportunity at Dhulikhel, we glide downhill past Dolalghat towards Bahrabise for a fishy lunch (another one hour). Though there are plenty of beer shops along the route, we encourage one and all not to drink while on the course of the ride.For another hour, the road is mostly narrow and winding up to the Miteri Pul (Friendship Bridge) at the Tibetan border. This is just half of the ride. Nepali citizenship holders have an option to go across to Zangmo (Khasa in Nepali) on the Tibetan side for a few hours. Khasa has become a favorite shopping destination for many Nepalis. 

Non-Nepalis can take a dip in the hot springs and get rid of their ailments, or take a walk to the not-so-friendly border bridge (no photos!) or a short walk to the Buddhist monastery.

On overnight trips, we have an option to stay at one of the many resorts on the highway. They have to be booked in advance prior to the trip.

110 kilometers to Tatopani; seven kms to Zangmo on the Tibetan side. Vice versa.

Highlights

Nepal ma Ostrich

Ostrich Nepal, a private company which started the farming at Gangoliya VDC-1 in Rupandehi, said the ostrich products will be in the market this year.

The proprietor of the company, CP Sharma, told a press conference on Saturday that there are 1,000 ostriches, mostly chicks, in the farm now.

According to him, the company will supply about one tonne of ostrich meat in the market later in 2011. He said the company will increase the supply to 15 tonnes next year and 200 tonnes and 2,500 tonnes in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

A chick takes two to three years to grow fully. The company has invested Rs 300 million in the farm that has the area of around 20 bighas (around 13.54 hectares).

Sharma said the price of one kilogram of ostrich meat costs up to US$90 in the international market. “We are planning to sell the meat at Rs 2,000 per kg in Nepal,” he said.


I dont know if that price suits Nepali middle class market, but you can at least get to see some Ostrich in Rupandehi ofcourse.

Trees get Hugs

Children's, members of Armed Police Force (Nepal), and Locals hug trees as they prepare to take part in an attempt to create a Guinness World Record for the most number of people hugging trees for two minutes in Kathmandu June 5, 2011. 879 people took part in the event, which was held on World Environment Day to spread the message of saving the environment. 

So, now I think Nepal is changing  or at least Nepalese peoples are changing. We can see a lot of activities going on. I have shared a lot of articles about those activities being carried out and will share more.

Daughter helps struggling Gurkha

A former Gurkha soldier who now lives in Reading says he is happy his daughter has been given a visa to come to the UK from Nepal and look after him in his old age.

Prem Bahadur Sunwar, 75, whose name means "brave man", lost his hearing during the Borneo campaign in the 1960s.

Now in his 70s, he moved to the UK last year, but struggled to cope with life in Reading.

Now his daughter Pushpar has moved here to help him with daily tasks.

Saving Mount Everest: Waste Management Project 2011


The largest amount of solid waste collected from the slopes of Mt Everest was brought down to Namche Bazaar and showcased on May 29. The project called “Saving Mount Everest: Waste Management Project 2011” included 29 Nepali mountaineers who worked from April 17 to May 29, 2011 to collect waste from the world’s highest peak.

The waste materials weighing 8,110kgs (8.1 tons) were brought down to Namche from the Everest Base Camp (EBC) on the backs of 75 yaks and with the help of 65 porters, to be sorted out for further disposal. 
Among the total waste, 3,200kgs (3.2 tons) was handed to the authorities of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) for disposal, and the remainder was taken to Lukla and then flown to Kathmandu.

This is not the first time that cleanup campaigns have been organized on Mt Everest.



“Similar cleanup campaigns were held in 2003 and 2005 but this is the largest amount of waste that’s been brought down from Everest and from above 8,000 meters,” said Ang Dorjee Sherpa, president of SPCC. The 3.2 tons of waste handed to SPCC included tents, ropes, cardboard boxes and paper.

 “The waste will be burnt in incarcerator centers of the SPCC in the next few months,” informed Phinjo Sherpa, country director of Eco Himal, one of the organizers of the cleanup project.
Even with the collection of such a large amount of waste, 50 tons of solid waste still remains in the Everest region, as estimated by experts.

As it was, the project was carried out with the collaboration of Everest Summiteers Association (ESA), Eco Himal, and the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.

Funded with a budget of Rs 165 million, the project began in 2008, and its first phase was concluded with the showcasing of the waste collected from Mt Everest.

“We’ll now work to create sustainable waste management mechanisms and carry out another clean up campaign in 2012,” mentioned Diwas Pokharel, general secretary of ESA. He stressed that the project was different from other projects, as it focused on cleaning the area in the EBC from 5,360m and above.
The 29-member team was trained and encouraged to carry as much waste as they could.

“Nineteen of us worked above the EBC for seven hours or more to bring down waste everyday,” shared Pasang Sherpa, the team leader. “Each one of us carried down a minimum of 30kgs of waste.”

He explained that bringing down waste from the South Col of Mt Everest was specially challenging. “At 8,600m, it’s hard to believe that waste exists in all forms. You can find human excreta to cans and oxygen cylinders.”

Pema Diki Sherpa, 23, the only female mountaineer in the team who was also part of the First Inclusive Women Sagarmatha Expedition team that scaled Mt Everest in 2008, shared her satisfaction at the project’s success. “Even in 2008, we didn’t leave any waste behind. But this time, I was there only to clean the mountain.”

Besides the wastes that have been handed out to SPCC, the remainder has been flown to Kathmandu. “These wastes include metals, cans, helicopter parts and oxygen cylinders. We’ll be handing them to the Nepal Foundry Industries Ltd.

They will melt the metals and create gift items that will be sold to fund public awareness programs in the Khumbu region,” stated Pokharel.

While the project was successful in bringing down a huge amount of waste from the world’s highest peak, waste management is still a problem.

Janardan Subedi, Professor of Medical Sociology at Miami University who was on a trek to the EBC with his 20 American students, was skeptical about the project’s
achievement.

“Taking down the waste collected here to Kathmandu isn’t sustainable in the long run. Kathmandu itself is already dipped in waste, and flying down the waste appears ridiculous. A landfill site must be made in the Khumbu region.”

Sherpa of Eco Himal mentioned that the project was working to create a recycling factory for plastic products.
“Tourists who visit the Khumbu region take in a minimum intake of six liters of mineral water everyday. With more than 30,000 tourists coming here to trek in a season, the numbers of plastic bottles are ever increasing,” he said.

Since 1953, more than 3,500 mountaineers have reached the top of Mt Everest. Most expedition teams have left trails of wastes. But in recent years, the trend of cleaning Mt Everest has come in vogue. Mountaineers like Dawa Steven Sherpa, Ken Noguchi and Apa Sherpa are supporting the cause.

The government’s decision to require each expedition team to deposit an amount of US$4,000 for garbage and human waste disposal is another initiative.

But if the fragile environment of Mt Everest is to be preserved, the waste that has accumulated in the region from years of negligent climbing needs to be cleared up as soon as possible.

Nepali tourism economy depends heavily on expedition teams who are all over the slopes of Mt Everest but strict laws need to be regulated before it is too late. From porters and locals to mountaineers, each must contribute to maintaining the sanctity of Everest.

Climbing Mt Everest isn’t an issue, cleaning it is.

Gurkha : Another brave story

A Nepali soldier in the British army was given a top bravery award by Queen Elizabeth II on Wednesday for his heroics in Afghanistan, where he single-handedly saw off more than 30 Taliban fighters.

Corporal Dipprasad Pun, 31, said he thought he was going to die and so had nothing to lose in taking on the attackers who overran his checkpoint.

He was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC), which is given in recognition of acts of conspicuous gallantry during active operations against the enemy.

Pun fired more than 400 rounds, launched 17 grenades and detonated a mine to repel the Taliban assault on his checkpoint near Babaji in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan, last September.

Surrounded, the enemy opened fired from all sides and for 15 minutes Pun remained under continuous attack, including from rocket-propelled grenades and AK47 guns.

At one point of time, unable to shoot, he used his machine gun tripod to knock down a militant who was trying to climb the walls of the compound.

Pun was given his medal in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London.

The CGC is second only to the Victoria Cross—the highest honour for bravery in the face of the enemy.

“There wasn’t any choice but to fight. The Taliban were all around the checkpoint. I was alone,” he said.
